He is a registered patent attorney and has extensive experience in telecommunications, software, medical devices, Internet, e-commerce, financial services, and mechanical technologies.
Client Work
Jim’s practice is focused on preparing and prosecuting US and foreign patent applications, evaluating Intellectual Property (IP) portfolios and performing IP due diligence, carrying out patent landscaping and strategic IP management activities, drafting and reviewing licensing agreements, and advising clients on all IP related activities.
Previous Work
Prior to joining ArentFox Schiff, Jim was a partner at a boutique IP firm. Jim was also a senior divisional patent counsel for Medtronic, Inc., a Fortune 500 medical device company, where he led the IP strategic patent landscaping activities to align IP development with long-and short-term business goals. Jim also has experience in crafting and interpreting IP licensing agreements. Additionally, prior to working for Medtronic, Inc., Jim was responsible for establishing the IP practice group in an office of a prominent general practice law firm.
Before entering the legal profession, Jim worked for eight years as an engineer for GE Healthcare, GE Lighting, and GE Aviation.

Jim is a member of American Intellectual Property Law Association, the IP Section of the American Bar Association, and the Carolinas Patent, Trademark and Copyright Law Association.
