National Law Journal Features Maidie Oliveau’s Work for the Special Olympics

Counsel Maidie E. Oliveau was featured in a National Law Journal article that highlighted her efforts to help Los Angeles gear up for the Special Olympics World Games, the city’s biggest sports event in decades.

The event will take place in the summer of 2015 and is expected to attract more than 7,000 athletes from 170 countries. Maidie is serving as outside general counsel and secretary to the Special Olympics World Games organizing committee.

“Right now, our job is to be useful and build the culture,” Ms. Oliveau told the National Law Journal. The publication reported that her all-volunteer team is working primarily on transactional and employment matters: “We’re formalizing terms of event agreements, agreements with hotels, working on donor development activities and hiring and training the many volunteers staffing the event before, during and after the games,” said Ms. Oliveau. She added that the volunteer component is particularly crucial “because those people will be working with athletes and families with a variety of special needs.” Ms. Oliveau said that she doesn’t “have to twist many arms to get people to help.”
