Arent Fox Announces 2017 Promotions to Partner and Counsel
Washington, DC — Arent Fox LLP is pleased to announce the election of five new partners and two new counsel, effective January 1, 2017. The new partners are Jeffrey R. Makin, Matthew R. Mills, Kelli A. Scheid, and Brian D. Schneider. Samuel C. Cohen and Loni J. Sherwin were promoted to counsel.

Jeffrey R. Makin was an associate in the Complex Litigation practice in Los Angeles. His work focuses on complex, high-stakes disputes. Mr. Makin’s practice includes representing clients in international investment disputes, maritime boundary disputes, contract disputes, business disputes and torts, intellectual property litigation, and complex consumer class actions. He has also represented clients in connection with internal investigations and various regulatory issues. The clients that he represents are from a wide range of industries and sectors, including, the oil and gas, auto, construction, tech, telecom, health care, manufacturing, and retail industries. Mr. Makin received his JD from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law.
Matthew R. Mills was an associate in the Advertising, Promotions & Data Security practice in Washington, DC. Mr. Mills advises clients on advertising and marketing, consumer finance, e-commerce, data security and privacy, and intellectual property matters, with particular experience in media and entertainment, financial services, fashion, and consumer products. His advertising and marketing experience includes reviewing advertisements, advising on unfair and deceptive trade practices, and issues relating to the Federal Trade Commission regulations and guidelines, as well as state and other regulatory laws. In particular, Mr. Mills has experience reviewing media advertisements including television, radio, print, and internet, specifically banner, mobile, and keyword advertising. He is also a member of the firm’s Intellectual Property practice and works on a wide range of matters, including trademark, copyright, right of publicity, counterfeiting, and domain name disputes. Mr. Mills regularly assists clients with selecting, clearing, registering, and enforcing trademarks both domestically and abroad. He received his JD from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
Kelli A. Scheid was an associate in the Business department and represents clients in a wide variety of commercial transactions, including corporate structuring, finance, joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, and licensing. She also advises clients in the acquisition, sale, and leasing of commercial real estate, as well as in sports-related transactions. Before joining Arent Fox Ms. Scheid was a financial analyst at FleetBoston Financial (now Bank of America). She received her JD from the University of Virginia School of Law.
Brian D. Schneider was an associate in the firm’s Complex Litigation practice in Washington, DC. A former management consultant, Mr. Schneider partners with clients to craft their legal strategies; manage antitrust, health care, and other compliance risks; and navigate dispute resolution and litigation. For emerging and established trade associations, foundations, and technology firms, Mr. Schneider works alongside clients’ leadership, boards, and staff as outside general counsel to ensure their legal needs are in line with their business plans. He advises on antitrust, governance, contracting, and day-to-day legal matters, leveraging the breadth and depth of Arent Fox’s legal team to deliver a range of legal guidance. For health care clients, he pursues managed care and Medicare disputes, and manages responses to government investigations and related litigation. Mr. Schneider received his JD from Vanderbilt University Law School.
Samuel C. Cohen was an associate in the Health Care practice in Washington, DC where he focuses on providing advice to clients on compliance with health care fraud and abuse laws, with an emphasis on the Stark Law and anti-kickback statute. Mr. Cohen also advises clients on internal and external investigations, particularly investigations related to the False Claims Act, as well as on HIPAA regulations, reimbursement issues, and licensing requirements. As part of his practice, Mr. Cohen helps health care clients respond to government subpoenas, address related compliance issues, and negotiate associated settlement agreements and corporate integrity agreements. He also assists clients with drafting, implementing, and evaluating both fraud and abuse and HIPAA compliance programs. Mr. Cohen received his JD from Harvard Law School.
Loni J. Sherwin was an associate in the Intellectual Property practice in Washington, DC. She focuses on transactional IP, as well as trademark and copyright portfolio management, acquisition, licensing, disputes, and counseling. Ms. Sherwin regularly assists clients in drafting and negotiating a wide variety of IP contracts and trademark- and copyright-related provisions in commercial and corporate agreements; conducting trademark due diligence for corporate transactions; and clearing, registering, and enforcing companies’ marks both domestically and internationally. She has prosecuted trademark applications and represented clients in trademark opposition proceedings before the US Patent and Trademark Office and has counseled clients on intellectual property licensing, false and keyword advertising, copyrights, and unfair and deceptive trade practices and issues. Ms. Sherwin has particular experience in the consumer products and fashion retail industries, providing IP counsel to one of the world’s largest food, pet food, and beverage manufacturers, and one of the world’s largest fashion retailers. She received her JD from The George Washington University Law School.
