Arent Fox Partner Hunter Carter Ranked Among Top 100 Lawyers for Latin America by Latinvex
New York, NY — Arent Fox partner Hunter T. Carter has been named to Latinvex’s list of Latin America’s Top 100 Lawyers, an honor reflecting not only his overall reputation as an advisor and litigator in the region, but also his commitment to issues of importance in Latin America.
Latinvex classified the top lawyers working in Latin America in response to the growing number of important transactions originating in the economies of Central and South America. Latinvex publishes daily news and weekly analysis on Latin American business, including extensive coverage of the region’s legal, technology, and energy sectors.
An important component of Mr. Carter’s law practice focuses on Latin America. The co-head of Arent Fox’s Colombia Working Group and author of the online report “The Colombia Law & Business Post,” he is a member of the New York City Bar Vance Center for International Justice and the former chair of the City Bar’s Committee on Inter-American Affairs.
In addition to handling large commercial matters across the region, Mr. Carter is a well-known advocate for human rights: In 2012, he and a leading Chilean human rights lawyer filed the first international petition for marriage equality (against Chile) before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. He filed a similar case against Mexico in 2014, and in 2013 he addressed a full session of the Colombian Senate — in Spanish — to explain that equal civil marriage is protected by international human rights law. Mr. Carter was also a leader of two New York City Bar delegations to Guatemala to report on the genocide conviction of a former dictator and on massive corruption in the selection of judges.
Andrew I. Silfen, Managing Partner of Arent Fox’s New York office, said, “Hunter is not only an outstanding advisor and trial lawyer, who has represented major clients in both North and South America, he is a leading and tireless advocate for equality and human rights — again, on two continents. To those who know him and his work, it is no surprise whatsoever that a ranking of top lawyers in Latin America would not be complete without Hunter Carter.”
Arent Fox’s International Arbitration & Dispute Resolution practice boasts internationally recognized cross-border practices in core areas where business and government intersect, such as international arbitration, dispute resolution negotiations, and internal investigations; all facets of intellectual property protection, transfers, and strategy; international trade, including FCPA compliance; and corporate and securities transactions.
