Cristina Carvalho and Hunter Carter Rated Among Latin America’s Top Lawyers for the Third Consecutive Year
The annual rating honors leading attorneys from international law firms that are heavily involved in Latin America. Ms. Carvalho, a native of Brazil, serves as a go-to attorney in the US for major Latin American corporations, in addition to counseling and managing the intellectual property portfolios of top global brands worldwide. Throughout her career, she has used her knowledge and experience in the United States and Brazil to counsel clients on strategies for navigating different legal systems and cultures to realize opportunities in both mature and emerging markets. Ms. Carvalho is fluent in Portuguese and Spanish and is admitted to practice law in Washington, DC, New York, and Brazil.
Mr. Carter, who lives part time in Colombia, is an international litigator with an emphasis on Latin America. Mr. Carter handles large commercial matters across the region in addition to being a recognized advocate for human rights. He is a frequent commentator on the nuances of law and business for publications across Latin America, and is a sought-after speaker on topics such as the applicability of US laws to multi-national enterprises in the region, anti-corruption, human rights and on the professional responsibility of lawyers. In 2015 he co-chaired a successful trial before the Inter-American Court on Human Rights regarding torture in Chile, and announced an agreement in principle with the Chilean government to resolve another case he co-chairs, seeking marriage equality. Mr. Carter also leads a collective of pro bono lawyers called Alliance for Marriage in the Americas, or AMAmericas, and he is the lead advisor in a number of marriage equality cases in countries across Latin America. In addition, he is leading an initiative to promote harmonization and improvement of ethical standards, a founding member of the think tank Global Americans, a member of the New York City Bar Vance Center for International Justice, and the former chair of the City Bar’s Committee on Inter-American Affairs.
