Los Angeles Considers Banning Fur Sales On the Heels of San Francisco

Now, the Los Angeles City Council is considering a similar ban on the controversial product. If the measure passes, Los Angeles would surpass San Francisco as the largest city to bar the sale and manufacture of fur.

The exact details of the proposed ban are still to be determined, but the Council’s proposal calls for an ordinance similar to the recently-enacted San Francisco law, namely a ban on the sale and manufacture of fur products or any fashion accessory, including handbags, shoes, hats, earmuffs, jewelry, and key chains made in whole or in part of fur, with an exception for used fur products. If the City Council decides to move ahead with the ban, it will direct the city attorney’s office to draft an ordinance outlining the ban, which will then need to be approved and signed by Mayor Eric Garcetti.

Until the Council releases a draft ordinance, little additional information on the ban will be available, but retailers who sell fur products should remain alert to potential changes in city law. A fur ban in California’s largest city could also increase pressure on the fashion industry to change its practices and add momentum to efforts in other cities to follow suit.
